Congratulations to Patrick Hickey!!

Congratulations to Patrick Hickey, this year’s winner of the Christian Landry Memorial Award for Graduate Studies at University of New Brunswick!

Patrick is currently completing his Master of Arts degree in Experimental Psychology at UNB Saint John after completing a BSc in Biology and Psychology. During his studies, Patrick has served as President of the UNB Students’ Representative Council and Chair of the New Brunswick Student Alliance. He continues to serve as a member of the Board of Governors and as a Senator for the University of New Brunswick.

His research focuses on the health experiences of 2S/LGBTQIA+ Canadians and its impact on psychological wellness under the supervision of Dr. Lisa Best. More specifically, it focuses on healthcare access, unmet health needs, and psychological wellness and distress in the 2S/LGBTQIA+ population. Previous research using data from the 2015-16 Canadian Community Health Survey demonstrated significantly greater unmet health needs for lesbian, gay, and bisexual Canadians compared to the general population, despite similar perceived access to health services.

Expanding from these findings, Patrick’s current project is working to address deficits in representative data by creating inclusive and informed data from sexual and gender minorities through a series of questionnaires measuring overall health, healthcare access, psychological wellness, and experiences of discrimination or marginalization within the healthcare setting.

Hearty congratulations, Patrick!!
