Congratulations to Alberto Carneiro Barbosa de Souza, winner of the Gary Sealey Friends of Lambda Award! Alberto is a PhD Candidate in Anthropology, Carleton University. In an article published in The Conversation, Alberto writes, “In 2022, I will conduct research that I am sure will reveal a country devastated by the pandemic, with LGBTQ+ people facing social persecution.”
“The award motivated me to look for ways Carleton help the NGO I am researching,” Alberto says. “Long story short, yesterday CUPE 4600 donated CAD2,600 for the NGO ( Called CASA NEM) that shelters LGBTQ+ homeless population in Rio de Janeiro in extreme vulnerability. It was moving to see the Indianaræ (pronoun they, them) thank us over Zoom and let us know how that money is literally saving lives).“
Alberto has worked as an LGBTQ+ activist in Brazil and has worked, studied, and volunteered across Canada.
The Gary Sealey Friends of Lambda Award celebrates excellence in research on the subject of gay and lesbian, bisexual and transgendered peoples.
