OPPORTUNITY: Lambda Foundation Communications Project Assistant (Ottawa)

Summary

The Lambda Scholarship Foundation Canada is seeking an experienced researcher, writer, and digital communicator for the short-term contract position of Communications Project Assistant.

  • Wage: $25/hour (+4% vacation pay) for 25 hours per week. $500 maximum mileage allowance for vehicle expenses.
  • Contract length: 20 weeks maximum starting immediately and ending September 30, 2024.
  • Hybrid role based in Ottawa. The ideal applicant can travel regularly to the City of Ottawa Archives to conduct research.

The Lambda Scholarship Foundation Canada is primarily a volunteer-run organization which recently hired a part-time Development Manager tasked with designing an organizational sustainable funding strategy and sourcing and developing new collaborative community and post-secondary partnerships.

Scope of the Position & Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Development Manager, the Communications Project Assistant will be responsible for developing the “Lambda Foundation 40th Anniversary History Project.”

The work requires frequent trips to the City of Ottawa Archives to conduct investigative research into the Lambda Foundation records, including conducting interviews with previous Board Members and award recipients. With over 20 years of volunteer Board Membership, we want to showcase the past and present leaders of Lambda who have created the history we now steward.

The outcome of the Project is the development of a broad range of evergreen content and messaging that can be used as articles, stories, images, and so on, that tell the story of Lambda’s early beginnings to where we are now. Content will be formatted to publish on our website and social media channels and for use in promotional materials.

The Communications Project Assistant will assist in the development of a public awareness campaign about Lambda’s 40-year history.

This PR campaign will include the creation of scholarship and award recipient profiles, details about how our awards have supported research about 2SLGBTQIA+ and QTBIPOC studies, as well as the future of the organization. The project will also provide content for our marketing and fundraising engagement strategies to develop new relationships with other organizations and connect with potential funders and philanthropists across Canada.

We are seeking an experienced communicator who can adhere to a short timeline. You must be a self-starter who works well independently and has demonstrated exceptional research, editing, writing, and communication skills. Funding for this opportunity is supported by a grant from WAGE (Women and Gender Equality Canada), through their capacity-building stream.

Desired Knowledge and Experience

  • Excellent communication abilities (oral and written).
  • Experience or education in researching, copywriting, writing, and editing.
  • Experience creating content for different types of social media.
  • Understanding of media relations and digital media strategies.
  • Deep knowledge of or experience with barriers facing 2SLGBTQIA+ when accessing post-secondary education, what intersectionality is and the role it plays in erecting and maintaining those barriers.
  • Experience using online communications tools, including Canva and commonly used social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, Instagram, etc.).
  • Ability to enter data accurately and attention to detail.

Good to have:

  • Knowledge of basic fundraising approaches.
  • Experience or education in graphic design.
  • Preference for bilingualism in English and French.
