Congratulations to Jeremy Oueis, Nicole LaViolette Friends of Lambda Prize Recipient, 2024

Nicole LaViolette Friends of Lambda Prize

Jeremy Oueis, BA (Hons.) (he/him) is a PhD student in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Ottawa.

He is receiving clinical training in the program to work with adults, children, and couples. Jeremy is conducting research under the guidance of his supervisor, Dr. Arne Stinchcombe, at the Healthy Aging Research Program (HARP) Laboratory. His current research focuses on social isolation and mental health outcomes among older gay, bisexual, and queer (GBQ) men in Canada.

Before beginning his doctoral studies, his undergraduate thesis was a qualitative examination of how GBQ men tend to cope following unwanted and or non-consensual sexual experiences. Jeremy has also researched the impact of GBQ men’s coming out experiences on their friendships with heterosexual men, and he was one of the lead researchers for a qualitative research project examining LGBTI caregivers and persons living with cognitive impairment experienced within dementia-care spaces.

About the Award

The purpose of the award is to encourage excellence in research on issues affecting gays, lesbians, bisexual, transgendered and intersex (LGBTI) people, specifically laws, and public and private policies affecting their human rights, as well as those matters pertaining more generally to their communities, values, achievements, arts and sports.

This Prize is named in honour of Professor Nicole LaViolette of the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa.

Professor LaViolette is a former recipient of the Lambda Foundation Prize (1999). She exemplifies leadership and achievement in her scholarly work on LGBT legal issues and her commitment to human rights. She is recognized nationally and internationally as a leading scholar and expert in refugee and immigration issues relating to sexual orientation and gender and as a community builder concerning the resettlement of LGBT refugees to Canada.

This Prize also acknowledges the many Friends of the Lambda Foundation whose generosity established this award in 1995, and who continue to support it.

The award will be open for applications in the early January/February of 2025. For more information and how to apply, click here.
