Congratulations to Emily Donelle, Christian Landry Memorial Award for Graduate Studies Recipient, 2024
Emily Donelle is a 26-year-old teacher based in Fredericton, New Brunswick, pursuing a Master of Education in Critical Studies at the University of New Brunswick.
As an Acadian and a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, Emily takes pride in serving as a positive role model for her students. Her goal is to create a genuinely welcoming and safe environment for all learners and to give back to her school community.
Her values and identity provide her with a unique perspective on the inclusion and well-being of queer students in educational settings. Through her research, she aims to ensure that the voices of Acadian and francophone 2SLGBTQIA+ youth are heard, valued, and respected.
Her research interests focus on the intersection of Queer and Acadian identities, which has gained prominence in the arts and culture scene recently. This cultural rise is occurring amid a political climate in New Brunswick that has established discriminatory narratives, leading to significant repercussions for both the queer and francophone communities.
Emily seeks to understand the impact of these influences on the sense of well-being and belonging among francophone students and teachers in New Brunswick schools. As a queer Acadian woman working in education, Emily recognizes the importance of this research, particularly given that the intersection of Acadian and queer identities is not widely acknowledged, especially in the field of education. She is committed to contributing to the knowledge on this topic to validate the lived experiences of students and teachers who navigate their educational journeys within these identities.
