Lambda Scholarship Foundation Canada and Fierté littéraire are proud to announce that the first Lambda Foundation Emerging 2SLGBTQIA+ Francophone Writer Award has been presented to Rowan Mercille for Bébé braillard. Rowan also receives a $5,000 award.

The prize was presented at the Des livres et des paillettes event, held July 31 at Place du Village as part of the Fierté Montréal festival, hosted by drag queen Jessie Précieuse.

“Bébé braillard is a collection of short stories marked by a captivating, storytelling voice. Drawing on memories, near and distant, sometimes anchored by a photograph, the narrator’s ‘I’ invites readers to witness a process of reshaping toward self-love. A reading that provokes smiles and bursts of laughter,” said the jury — composed of author Uashteskun, bookseller and literary director Sandrine Bourget-Lapointe, who has worked in the literary field for over 10 years, and Domenic Beneventi, assistant professor of comparative literature and translation at the Université de Sherbrooke.

Congratulations as well to this year’s other finalists — Laura Doyle-Péan, Laurence Caron-Castonguay, and Maryse Andraos — and to Benoit Jodoin, who received a special jury mention for Archives de nos amitiés imparfaites. You can read more about all four finalists in our earlier post.

This partnership between Fierté littéraire and Lambda Foundation supports the visibility and recognition of literary artists in 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

This award exists because one donor asked a simple question: what would you love to help create? If you’ve ever wondered what it might look like to build something like this — a scholarship, a bursary, an award shaped entirely around what matters to you — we’d love to talk.
